Toyota Hilux GL

Highlights

• 80-litre fuel tank capacity
• Extensive GCC authorised service network
• Strong value retention in the GCC used market

Summary

This GCC-spec double cab remains the gold standard for versatility, balancing its duties as a reliable workhorse and a capable weekend desert explorer. Powered by the proven 2.7L petrol engine, it offers the mechanical simplicity that makes this model a favorite across the region's service centers. The combination of white paint and Four Wheel Drive ensures this specific pickup remains a highly liquid asset in the local resale market. While the mileage reflects active use, the legendary body-on-frame durability means it is well-positioned for many more years of service. It stands out as a practical choice for those who need a truck that handles extreme summer heat and long highway hauls with equal ease.

This Car vs Other 2022 Hiluxs

With 192,100 km on the odometer, this vehicle has been driven more than the typical GCC average for its age, yet it remains mechanically robust due to its simple naturally aspirated powertrain. The white exterior is the most sought-after color in the region, offering superior thermal management in direct sun and ensuring the highest possible resale interest. It represents a functional entry point for buyers who prioritize mechanical integrity and recent model year styling over low-mileage premiums.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim bridges the gap between basic utility and daily comfort, adding essential features like power windows and a more refined interior finish compared to the entry-level commercial variants. In the GCC market, the GL is highly valued for including a proper Four Wheel Drive system with a selectable transfer case, a critical feature for desert terrain that basic 4x2 trims lack. It also features upgraded seating materials designed to better withstand the high-use demands of regional fleet or family operations.

Hilux vs Segment Rivals

The Hilux leads rivals like the Mitsubishi L200 and Isuzu D-Max in terms of sheer parts availability and technician familiarity throughout the GCC. While competitors may offer slightly different tech, the Hilux’s 80-litre fuel tank provides a superior range for cross-border drives or long stretches in the Saudi and UAE deserts. Its air conditioning system is widely considered the most effective in the segment, a decisive factor during the peak summer months.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.7L automatic typically averages between 10.4L and 11.5L/100km depending on cargo load and highway speed. Maintenance is straightforward, with authorized Toyota service centers available in nearly every major town across the UAE, Oman, and Saudi Arabia, keeping parts costs low. The Hilux typically retains approximately 55-60% of its value after three years, significantly outperforming European and American counterparts in the same weight class.

Performance & Capability

The 164 hp engine is tuned for durability rather than high-speed sprints, delivering reliable torque for hauling and navigating sandy inclines. Its selectable 4x4 system and high ground clearance make it a staple for desert excursions and rough construction sites across the Emirates. On the highway, the 6-speed automatic provides a stable cruise, while the heavy-duty suspension is built to manage significant payloads without compromising vehicle geometry.

Comfort & Cabin

The double cab configuration comfortably seats five adults, with a cabin designed for easy cleaning after a day in the dunes or on-site. The air conditioning system features powerful blowers and dedicated vents that are specifically engineered to maintain a cool environment even when external temperatures exceed 45°C. Practical storage bins and a straightforward dashboard layout ensure that all controls are easily accessible during long-distance drives between emirates.

Safety

Standard safety features include dual front airbags and an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) to maintain control under heavy loads. The vehicle is built on a high-tensile steel frame that provides a rigid safety cell, complemented by Brake Assist (BA) and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) which are particularly useful when navigating unpredictable sand or gravel surfaces at speed.

The bottom line

For the buyer who values a bulletproof reputation and wide-reaching service support, this Hilux GL is a reliable partner that holds its value better than almost any other vehicle in the region.
