Summary

This 2023 Nissan X-Trail S represents the first year of the fourth-generation redesign, offering a significantly more modern cabin and sharper exterior styling than its predecessors. As the S trim with a 5-seat layout, it prioritises maximum cargo volume and efficiency, achieving a verified 16.1 km/L that makes it ideal for long-distance GCC commuting. Grey is a highly practical choice for the region, masking desert dust well while maintaining strong demand in the local used market. With its reliable 2.5L engine and front-wheel drive setup, this SUV avoids the complexity of heavier 4WD systems, resulting in lower long-term maintenance costs for urban families. It stands out as a sensible, modern choice for those who value cabin space and fuel economy over off-road hardware.

This Car vs Other 2023 X-Trails

With 71,700 km on the odometer, this vehicle has been driven approximately 35,000 km per year, which is above the GCC average of 25,000 km but typical for a modern commuter used for inter-emirate travel. The grey exterior is one of the most resilient colors for the local climate, helping to maintain its resale value better than niche shades. While the mileage is higher than some garage-kept examples, it reflects a vehicle that has been regularly utilized on UAE highways, which is often preferable to cars left sitting in extreme heat.

S vs Lower Trims

As the S trim, this model serves as the entry point to the new generation, yet it still includes essential modern tech like LED headlamps and an 8-inch touchscreen with smartphone integration. Unlike higher SV or SL trims, the S features durable black cloth upholstery which stays cooler in the summer sun compared to leather alternatives. By choosing the S trim, buyers benefit from 17-inch alloy wheels that offer a more comfortable ride quality on uneven surfaces and are significantly cheaper to replace than the 19-inch variants found on top-spec models.

X-Trail vs Segment Rivals

The X-Trail competes directly with the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V, leading the segment in modular cargo space with up to 585 litres available in this 5-seat configuration. Its 2.5L engine is specifically tuned for efficiency, offering a higher fuel economy rating than many non-hybrid rivals in the compact SUV class. Additionally, the X-Trail provides a more modern interior layout following its 2023 refresh, giving it a competitive edge in cabin tech over older designs in the same price bracket.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.5L powertrain is engineered for low-cost operation, requiring only standard 91 RON petrol and achieving roughly 6.2 L/100km on open highways. Nissan's presence in the GCC is vast, with authorized service centers available in every major city from Dubai to Riyadh, ensuring parts are always affordable and accessible. The X-Trail typically retains 60-70% of its value after three years in the UAE market, making it one of the most stable investments in the compact SUV segment. Service intervals are recommended every 10,000 km, keeping scheduled maintenance predictable and manageable.

Performance & Capability

The 181 hp produced by the 2.5L 4-cylinder engine provides sufficient power for confident highway overtaking and smooth city merging. With a top speed of 180 km/h and a 0-100 km/h time of approximately 9.3 seconds, it offers a balanced driving experience for daily UAE traffic. While this FWD model is not intended for heavy dune bashing, its 200 mm ground clearance is perfect for handling gravel tracks and sandy parking areas at weekend getaway spots. The Xtronic CVT is optimized for smooth power delivery, minimizing the jerky shifts common in older transmissions.

Comfort & Cabin

The 5-seat layout creates an incredibly airy environment with best-in-class legroom for second-row passengers. Standard rear AC vents are a necessity for the GCC summer, ensuring that the cabin cools down rapidly even when temperatures exceed 45°C. The dashboard is finished with soft-touch materials, and the inclusion of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto ensures you stay connected during long desert drives. Noise insulation has been improved for this generation, resulting in a quieter highway experience than previous models.

Safety

Safety is a priority in the 2023 redesign, which carries a 5-star ANCAP rating and comes equipped with Nissan’s Safety Shield 360 as standard. This includes essential features for GCC highways such as Blind Spot Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which are invaluable in fast-moving multi-lane traffic. The vehicle also features Intelligent Forward Collision Warning and Emergency Braking, providing an extra layer of protection for family trips across the Emirates.

The bottom line

For the UAE family or commuter seeking a modern, fuel-efficient SUV with the latest safety tech and maximum luggage space, this 2023 X-Trail S is a highly practical and value-retentive choice.
