BYD Leopard 8 FLAGSHIP

Highlights

• 0–100 km/h in 4.8 seconds
• 310 mm maximum ground clearance
• 125 km electric range (CLTC)

Summary

This 2024 BYD Leopard 8 Flagship represents the leading edge of the plug-in hybrid SUV segment, combining heavy-duty off-road hardware with supercar-level acceleration. At two years old with 23,000 km, its mileage is significantly below the GCC annual average, making it a highly attractive option for those seeking a near-new flagship experience. The Black exterior is a perennially strong resale choice in the UAE and wider Gulf markets, ensuring better value retention when it's time to upgrade. As a Chinese-spec import, it offers a level of intelligent tech—including the DiSus-P suspension—that rivals many European luxury off-roaders at a more accessible entry point. The primary consideration for a GCC buyer is the specialized service requirement for its advanced DMO hybrid platform, though BYD's rapidly expanding regional network continues to improve parts availability.

This Car vs Other 2024 Leopard 8s

With only 23,000 km on the odometer, this vehicle has been driven well below the typical GCC average of 20,000–25,000 km per year. This low-mileage status ensures that the advanced Blade Battery and DMO hybrid system are in their prime operating window. The Black finish is one of the most sought-after colors for large SUVs in the region, providing a significant advantage in the local used market compared to niche or brighter tones.

Flagship vs Lower Trims

The Flagship trim is distinguished by the full-featured DiSus-P intelligent hydraulic body control system, which allows for active damping and height adjustment that lower trims lack. Inside, it adds the premium 18-speaker audio system and a 50-inch AR head-up display, features that significantly enhance long-distance comfort during cross-emirate drives. You also benefit from the full suite of Huawei-powered intelligent driving aids and ventilated massager seats for both front and rear rows.

Leopard 8 vs Segment Rivals

The Leopard 8 stands out against rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser 300 and Land Rover Defender by offering a 125 km pure-electric range, ideal for silent, fuel-free city commuting. Its 310 mm maximum ground clearance and active hydraulic suspension provide a tech-forward approach to off-roading that most traditional ladder-frame competitors can only match with expensive aftermarket modifications. Furthermore, the combined 550 kW output provides a massive performance gap over most standard V6 and V8 rivals in the segment.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for this PHEV sits at approximately 8.9 L/100km when the battery is depleted, though daily city driving can be entirely electric if charged regularly. While this is a Chinese-spec vehicle, BYD’s growing presence in the UAE via authorized distributors provides a path for routine maintenance, though buyers should verify software compatibility for local map services. Depreciation for premium Chinese EVs in the GCC is currently stabilizing as brand trust grows, with the Leopard 8 expected to hold value better than early-generation electric imports due to its rugged body-on-frame appeal.

Performance & Capability

The DMO platform delivers an incredible 748 hp and 760 Nm of torque, allowing this full-sized SUV to hit 100 km/h in just 4.8 seconds—perfect for confident highway overtaking. The DiSus-P suspension is the star of the show, offering a 140 mm adjustment stroke that can raise the vehicle to clear significant desert dunes or lower it for stable high-speed cruising. It also features a specialized 'three-wheel drive' emergency mode and advanced low-range capabilities for serious weekend adventures in the Liwa or Hatta regions.

Comfort & Cabin

Configured as a 7-seater, the cabin is designed to stay exceptionally cool during the intense GCC summer thanks to a powerful multi-zone climate system and high-performance acoustic glass. The interior is a tech showcase with triple dashboard screens and dedicated cooling for the center console to keep beverages chilled on long desert trips. All three rows offer generous legroom, and the high-grade leather seats feature ventilation in both the first and second rows, a critical luxury for the local climate.

Safety

Safety is managed by a comprehensive 14-airbag system and a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor that feeds into the Huawei ADS 3.0 suite. This provides advanced active safety features like high-speed autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, and a 360-degree transparent-chassis camera system that is invaluable for both tight urban parking in Dubai and navigating rocky terrain off-road. The Blade Battery technology also offers industry-leading thermal stability, a vital safety factor in the high ambient temperatures of the Gulf.

The bottom line

This Leopard 8 is the ideal choice for a tech-savvy family in the UAE looking for the power of a supercar and the ruggedness of a traditional 4x4 with the efficiency of a PHEV. At two years old with such low mileage, it offers a significant saving over a new import while remaining in peak mechanical condition.
