Summary

This 20-year-old Kia Sportage LX offers a durable entry into the SUV segment, powered by the smooth 2.7-litre V6 that provides reliable performance for GCC highway commuting. At 180,000 km, the mileage is remarkably low for its age, averaging just 9,000 km per year—well below the typical GCC annual usage of 20,000 km. The Blue exterior remains a distinctive choice, while the GCC specification ensures the air conditioning and cooling systems are built to handle extreme summer temperatures. This model stands out for its mechanical simplicity and ease of maintenance, making it a practical choice for budget-conscious buyers who need a versatile daily driver. Its compact footprint combined with V6 power makes it equally adept at navigating tight city traffic in Dubai or cruising between emirates.

This Car vs Other 2006 Sportages

While many SUVs from this era have exceeded 300,000 km, this example's 180,000 km reading represents a significant advantage in longevity. In the GCC market, finding a two-decade-old vehicle with such low average annual mileage is rare, suggesting a life of light urban use rather than heavy cross-border commuting. The Blue paintwork offers a unique alternative to the sea of white and silver, maintaining a clean look that is easier to manage in dusty conditions.

LX vs Lower Trims

The LX trim with the 2.7-litre V6 engine is a major step up from the base 2.0-litre four-cylinder models often found in this generation. This V6 configuration adds much-needed torque for highway overtaking and includes standard features like 16-inch alloy wheels and roof rails that enhance its utility. Inside, the LX focuses on durable materials designed to withstand the high-UV GCC environment.

Sportage vs Segment Rivals

Compared to contemporary rivals like the Toyota RAV4 or Honda CR-V, the Sportage was noted for offering a V6 engine at a more accessible price point. Its 195 mm ground clearance is competitive for light off-road paths, and the flat-folding rear seats provide a more versatile cargo area than many European compact crossovers. The widespread availability of Kia parts across the UAE and Saudi Arabia gives it a significant edge in long-term ownership ease.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the V6 engine typically averages around 11.4 L/100km, which is efficient for a 6-cylinder SUV of this vintage. Maintenance is straightforward with 10,000 km service intervals, and Kia's extensive authorized network ensures affordable parts availability from Musaffah to Sharjah. As a GCC-spec model, it retains value better than imported equivalents, offering a stable floor for resale price due to its reputation for mechanical durability.

Performance & Capability

The 173 hp V6 engine delivers a smooth, linear power delivery that is well-suited for the steady speeds of GCC highways. With 241 Nm of torque, it handles full passenger loads comfortably and offers a towing capacity of up to 1,500 kg for light trailers. The 4-speed automatic transmission is tuned for durability, providing reliable shifts even in stop-and-go traffic during the peak of summer.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for practicality, featuring 667 litres of boot space that expands significantly with the 60/40 split-folding rear seats. The air conditioning system is famously robust, a key requirement for the region, featuring dedicated vents that ensure the 5-passenger cabin stays cool. The elevated seating position provides excellent visibility, which is highly beneficial when navigating busy multi-lane roads.

Safety

Standard safety features for this LX trim include dual front airbags and Electronic Stability Control, which was advanced for the segment in 2006. It also features 4-wheel ABS and traction control to maintain grip on sandy or rain-slicked surfaces. The body-on-frame-inspired monocoque design provides a sturdy passenger cell, earning it solid safety marks for its era.

The bottom line

For a buyer seeking a reliable V6 SUV with unusually low mileage for its age, this GCC-spec Sportage is an exceptional value opportunity. It combines Kia's proven mechanical durability with a level of preservation that is hard to find in the 20-year-old used market.
