Summary

This 2024 Geely Coolray GL represents a modern and efficient choice for the GCC market, offering a sophisticated 4-cylinder turbocharged powertrain that provides a smoother drive compared to earlier 3-cylinder models. Finished in white, the most preferred resale color in the region, it is well-positioned to retain its value for future owners. The GL trim provides the core performance and sharp styling that has made this model a top-three B-SUV contender in several GCC markets. With a high feature density for its segment, it stands as a strong alternative to established Japanese and Korean rivals for city commuting and highway travel between the Emirates. For the GCC buyer, the balance of power and fuel efficiency makes it a highly practical daily driver.

This Car vs Other 2024 Geely Coolrays

With 99,799 km on the odometer over two years, this vehicle reflects a usage pattern typical of active highway commuters in the GCC, where annual averages often reach 40,000 to 50,000 km. While the mileage is higher than a purely city-driven example, it indicates a car that has likely spent much of its time at steady highway speeds, which is often easier on the transmission and cooling systems than stop-start traffic. The white exterior is a strategic choice for the local market, offering superior heat reflection and the strongest possible resale demand.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL trim serves as the essential entry point into the Coolray's refined 4-cylinder era, ensuring that even this value-focused trim benefits from the full 172 hp and 290 Nm torque output. Unlike base-level subcompact SUVs that often strip away safety, the GL maintains crucial GCC requirements such as a 360-degree camera system and tire pressure monitoring. It retains the signature sporty aesthetic, including the carbon-style side mirrors and aggressive rear wing found on the higher-spec GF models.

Coolray vs Segment Rivals

The Coolray leads segment rivals like the Hyundai Creta and Kia Seltos in pure acceleration, utilizing its Volvo-derived BMA architecture to achieve a sub-8 second 0-100 km/h time. In the intense GCC summer, its air conditioning system and cabin insulation are noted for performance that rivals the cooling efficiency of larger Japanese crossovers. Its 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission is specifically engineered to handle the thermal demands of high-temperature urban idling better than standard dry-clutch units.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption is highly competitive, averaging 5.8 to 6.5 L/100km depending on the ratio of highway to city driving. Geely's authorized service network, managed by major distributors like AGMC in the UAE, has expanded rapidly across the GCC, ensuring parts availability and professional maintenance are accessible. The model's depreciation follows the trend of high-growth Chinese brands in the region, which now offer improved value retention due to their increased market share and reliable 4-cylinder powertrains.

Performance & Capability

The 1.5-liter turbocharged engine delivers 172 hp, providing confident overtaking power on fast-moving highways like the E11. Drivers can select from four distinct drive modes—Eco, Comfort, Sport, and Adaptive—allowing the vehicle to adjust its steering and throttle response for different GCC road conditions. While it is a road-biased crossover, its ground clearance and punchy low-end torque make it perfectly capable of handling gravel tracks and weekend excursions to rural areas.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the Coolray features an 'Energy Awakening' interior design with a focus on driver ergonomics and visibility. The 5-seat configuration offers generous legroom for a subcompact SUV, with rear cooling vents ensuring all passengers remain comfortable during the summer months. The digital cockpit and high-resolution central display provide a modern tech experience that often exceeds what is standard in this price bracket, while the cabin is well-insulated against wind noise at highway speeds.

Safety

Standard safety for the GL trim includes a comprehensive suite featuring ABS, EBD, and Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) to maintain traction on sandy or rain-slicked surfaces. The inclusion of a 360-degree camera is a significant advantage for navigating tight parking spaces in busy urban centers like Dubai or Riyadh. Passive safety is reinforced by multiple airbags and a chassis designed with high-strength steel to meet global safety standards.

The bottom line

For the buyer seeking a modern, high-tech SUV that doesn't compromise on highway performance, this 2024 Coolray GL is a savvy choice that offers a premium feel at a competitive market position.
