Summary

This 2024 Geely Coolray GL represents a modern buying opportunity in the GCC market, offering the punchy performance of the newer 4-cylinder turbo engine with the reliability of low-mileage usage for its age. Grey is a highly sought-after, neutral tone in the UAE and Saudi Arabia, ensuring it stays cooler in summer and maintains strong resale demand. As the entry-level trim, the GL focuses on delivering the same mechanical excellence as higher trims while remaining significantly more affordable to own and insure. It stands out by offering a premium-feeling cabin and Volvo-derived platform engineering that typically costs much more in European rivals. For the GCC buyer, this specific unit is an ideal balance of a nearly-new model year and the proven durability of the regional BMA architecture.

This Car vs Other 2024 Coolrays

With 73,421 km over two years, this Coolray has seen active use slightly above the GCC annual average, suggesting it has been a reliable primary commuter. In the local market, the Grey exterior is a major advantage for resale, as it hides dust well and is highly preferred by second-hand buyers compared to vibrant colors. This unit offers the 2024-specific mechanical updates, including the more refined 4-cylinder engine, making it more desirable than earlier 3-cylinder models often found in the used market.

GL vs Lower Trims

The GL serves as the standard entry point in the GCC, meaning it avoids the complexity of higher-trim electronics while keeping the same 172 hp powertrain. Unlike lower unofficial or older 'Standard' variants, the 2024 GL comes equipped with essential GCC priorities like a high-definition touchscreen, LED daytime running lights, and a powerful climate control system. It retains the core sporty DNA and 7-speed DCT transmission found in the GF, providing the same driving dynamics for a much lower entry price.

Coolray vs Segment Rivals

The Coolray leads rivals like the MG ZS and Hyundai Creta in pure performance, offering a 0-100 km/h time of 7.6 seconds that few in this price bracket can match. Its Volvo-developed BMA platform provides superior high-speed stability on GCC highways compared to more budget-oriented competitors. Additionally, the cabin insulation and material quality are notably higher than segment averages, offering a quieter ride during long inter-city drives.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption averages around 6.5 L/100km, which is exceptionally efficient for stop-and-go traffic in cities like Dubai or Riyadh. Service intervals are typically every 10,000 km, and Geely’s expanding authorized network through partners like AGMC ensures parts are readily available across the UAE. The Coolray currently holds strong value retention in the GCC, typically retaining about 60% of its value over three years, outperforming several other emerging brands.

Performance & Capability

The 1.5L turbocharged engine is the highlight, delivering 290 Nm of torque which makes highway overtaking effortless even in high summer temperatures. The 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission is tuned for smoothness, ensuring comfort during daily commutes without the 'rubber-band' feel of CVT rivals. With a top speed of 195 km/h and multiple drive modes including Sport and Eco, it adapts easily to both fast-moving UAE motorways and fuel-conscious city driving.

Comfort & Cabin

The 5-seat cabin is designed with the GCC climate in mind, featuring a powerful air conditioning system with dedicated rear vents to keep all passengers cool. The GL trim includes high-quality fabric and leather-trimmed seats that remain comfortable even after the car has been parked in the sun. Technology is centered around a large 12.3-inch infotainment screen that integrates seamlessly for modern smartphone users, making long road trips more enjoyable.

Safety

Standard safety on the GL trim includes front and side airbags, electronic stability control, and a tire pressure monitoring system which is vital for safe highway driving in the heat. It also features a rear-view camera and parking sensors as standard, helping to navigate tight urban parking spots. The chassis is built using high-strength steel, providing a robust safety cell that has earned high praise in global testing.

The bottom line

Perfect for a young professional or a small family looking for a stylish, quick, and fuel-efficient SUV that still feels new. This 2024 GL is the smartest way to get into a modern Geely with the improved 4-cylinder engine while the factory warranty is still likely active.
