How Does The Vehicle Impound Process Work?

Once an impoundable offence is recorded, the relevant traffic authority places an impound requirement against the vehicle. The owner must then follow the instructions provided by the authority handling the case. Depending on the emirate and offence, motorists may need to:

2. Complete the required impound period.

How Much Can It Cost To Release An Impounded Car In Dubai?

For serious offences covered under Dubai’s local impound rules, the amount required to release a vehicle can be much higher than the original traffic fine.

Examples include:

• AED 100,000: Unauthorised road racing.
• AED 50,000: Certain serious offences, including reckless driving and specified red-light or number-plate cases.
• AED 10,000: Certain illegal modifications, excessive tinting, fleeing police and driving without plates.

Repeat offences within one year can also result in higher release charges. Dubai also offers a Pay Against Impound option for some eligible cases. Under applicable rules, a light vehicle may be charged AED 100 for each remaining impound day instead of completing the physical impound period.

What Is Smart Impound?

Smart impound allows an eligible vehicle to remain at an approved private location instead of an impound yard. A monitoring device is fitted to the vehicle and linked to the authorities. During the impound period:

• The car must remain at the approved location.
• It cannot be driven normally.
• Movement may only be allowed in approved circumstances.
• The full impound period must still be completed.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi both operate smart impound systems for eligible cases.

Car Impound Rules In Abu Dhabi

Crossing a red light is one of the clearest examples. The penalty can include:

• AED 1,000 fine
• 12 black points
• 30-day vehicle impound

Other serious Abu Dhabi offences can also result in substantial release charges, particularly for reckless driving, unauthorised racing and serious number-plate violations.

Car Impound Rules In Sharjah

Sharjah Police provides both conventional and smart vehicle impound options. Vehicles can be held at the Al Labsah impound yard or, where approved, through home impoundment.

Sharjah Police currently states:

• Purchasing an eligible impound period costs AED 100 per day.
• Smart home impound costs AED 10 per day for the monitoring device.
• The vehicle can be kept at another private parking location if approved.

Sharjah Police’s current FAQ also refers to an impound period of up to 30 days within its impound service guidance. Motorists with more serious offences should still check their individual cases because federal traffic regulations prescribe longer periods for some violations.

Car Impound Rules In Ajman

Ajman applies the federal traffic offence framework, with its official traffic fine schedule listing impound periods alongside fines and black points. For example, dangerous driving is listed with a fine of AED 2,000, 23 black points, and a 60-day impound.

Ajman Police also operates a smart impound system that allows eligible vehicles to remain in private parking under electronic monitoring. The currently accessible official fee guidance dates from 2020, so motorists should confirm the latest smart impound fee directly with Ajman Police before payment.

Car Impound Rules In Ras Al Khaimah

Ras Al Khaimah introduced a smart home vehicle impound system in January 2025. It allows eligible owners to keep an impounded vehicle at an approved location while it is monitored electronically.

The service covers all types of vehicles and most traffic violations. Ras Al Khaimah Police states that motorists using the service must settle the vehicle’s traffic fines and pay the applicable smart impound fee.

Car Impound Rules In Fujairah & Umm Al Quwain

For Fujairah and Umm Al Quwain, motorists primarily use the federal Ministry of Interior traffic system for many vehicle and traffic services. Umm Al Quwain Police, for example, redirects services such as traffic-fine payments and vehicle transactions to the MOI platform.

Fujairah Police similarly integrates the Ministry of Interior traffic services within its digital service network.

For these emirates, the safest approach is to check the individual traffic file through MOI or the relevant emirate’s police service to confirm the impound period, payment requirements and release procedure.

How Do You Release An Impounded Car?

The exact procedure depends on the emirate and authority responsible for the impound. Drivers should therefore check the traffic file rather than assuming that paying the original fine automatically releases the vehicle.

In general, the following steps may apply:

1. Check the traffic violation and impound details.
2. Confirm the required impound period.
3. Complete physical or smart impound where required.
4. Pay the traffic fine.
5. Settle any local vehicle-release amount.
6. Resolve black points or licence-related requirements.
7. Clear additional vehicle fines if required.
8. Request the relevant release approval or certificate.
9. Collect the vehicle once the authority confirms its release.

What Happens If You Leave An Impounded Car Unclaimed?

Ignoring an impounded vehicle can lead to further costs and, in some circumstances, more serious consequences. In Dubai, if an owner fails to collect the vehicle after the impound period has ended, the decree provides for an additional AED 50 per day for the vehicle’s continued stay in the impound area.

Drivers should therefore deal with the impound as soon as they are legally able to do so. The vehicle does not automatically become available for collection simply because the original impound period has passed.
