BMW unleash 2018 M5 Competition; packs 617 hp

Does the 2018 M5 not cut it for you? Is it just too ‘slow’? Well, BMW have a new version of the super saloon that is slightly quicker in a striaght line; this is the 2018 M5 Competition.

Starting with what is most important, the 2018 M5 Competition packs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 pushing out an eye-watering 617 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, an increase of 24 horses over the already impressive stock 2018 M5.

Thanks to the additional kick, the M5 Competition launches from 0-100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and 200 km/h in 10.8 seconds! Compared to the standard mode, it’s 0.1 and 0.3 seconds quicker.

As with the regular M5, a rear-biased all-wheel-drive system is standard as is an eight-speed automatic gearbox with the drivetrain working in tandem with the vehicles Active M Differential. While portions of the drivetrain do carry over, the 2018 M5 Competition features unique engine mounts with an increased spring rate which BMW claims “even more direct engine response and immediate transmission of its power to the drivetrain.”

BMW engineers have fine-tuned the suspension and chassis. Now sitting 7mm closer to the ground thanks to the rubber mounts being removed in favour of toe links with ball joints which allows for “even more precise wheel guidance at the rear axle” according to BMW.

As for the suspension, the 2018 M5 Competition is fitted with stiffer springs and firmer anti-roll bar. The dampers have also been tuned.

What about exterior and interior enhancements for the 2018 M5 Competition?

Apart from the performance upgrades, the super saloon receives subtle changes to the exterior. This includes high-gloss black accents on the mirror caps, grille and rear bumper, unique competition badges, bespoke 20-inch forged lightweight rims and a special sports exhaust system.

As for the interior, occupants will find custom safety belts, floor mats with an M5 logo, aluminium infused carbon dark chrome interior trim and Merino Aragon upholstery. Additionally, upon startup, the dashboard cluster displays an M Competition graphic.
