i8 Spyder spotted again

First shown off in 2012 as a concept, fans of the i8 Spyder have been begging for a droptop version ever since and that day is almost here. This freshly snapped picture shows us an almost production ready version driving around Europe.

Staying true to its original design, not only is there a soft black fabric roof that recess into the rear, notice the unit of where said item retracts to?

Instead of a single sloping unit, two dome structures takes its place giving the i8 Spyder a unique look just in case someone doesn’t notice the missing roof panel.

Besides that, it appears we’re in for a mild refresh as the entire car is covered in camouflage. Those who remember the concept model from a few years ago will remember the mirrorless doors, those won’t be available on production models as no car registration department around the world would allow that.

It’s said the i8 Spyder will weigh in lighter and contain a more efficient battery pack which results in an extended all-electric drive range from the current 24-kilometre distance.

The weight reduction comes as a surprise as convertible versions usually weigh in heavier than their fixed-roof counterparts.

While it is unconfirmed, we expect the 3-cylinder 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol motor and battery pack to pack an additional kick compared to the current 362 horsepower. 400+ horsepower wouldn’t come as a surprise resulting in a quicker 0-100 time.

i8 Spyder models will launch next year as a 2019 model with updated closed-top models to launch beforehand.
