The Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 coupe is a classic masterpiece renowned for its sophisticated design, powerful V8 engine, and exceptional craftsmanship. As one of the last hand-built Mercedes-Benz models, the 280 SE 3.5 Coupe continues to be a top choice for collectors and enthusiasts alike.

We got our hands on this classic legend recently and spent some time appreciating the beauty and engineering of this car. This Mercedes-Benz 280 SE is listed for sale on DubiCars by Tomini Classics.

History

Introduced in 1969, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupe marked a significant evolution in the W111 series, which began in the late 1950s. Originally launched with inline-six engines, the 280 SE 3.5 was the first in its lineup to feature a 3.5-litre V8 engine, making it the most powerful model of the series.

Produced in 1971, the 280 SE 3.5 Coupe was among the last of the hand-crafted Mercedes-Benz models, showcasing the brand’s commitment to quality and precision. The car was produced until 1971 — around 3,270 coupes and 1,232 cabriolets were produced.

Design

The 1971 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE 3.5 Coupe features a pillarless hardtop design with no B-pillar. It has a wide chrome grille with the iconic star emblem, flanked by vertically stacked headlights. The hood is slightly flatter to accommodate the V8 engine, and the fenders have a subtle flare for a balanced look.

At the rear, the coupe has rectangular taillights integrated into smooth, rounded fenders and a simple chrome bumper. Chrome accents, including window surrounds and side trim, highlight the car’s luxury without overwhelming its clean lines.

The 280 SE 3.5 Coupe is equipped with 14-inch steel wheels featuring colour-matched Mercedes-Benz hubcaps, often complemented by whitewall tyres, adding to its classic, refined appearance.

Interior

The interior of the 280 SE coupe features striking red leather upholstery paired with a white two-spoke steering wheel, creating an elegant look. The dashboard is adorned with walnut wood veneer and clear, functional instrumentation.

Front seats are individually adjustable, and the spacious rear bench comfortably seats two passengers. Chrome accents complement the vibrant red interior, adding a touch of classic luxury.

Features

The 280 SE was well-equipped for its time, offering a range of features that enhanced comfort and convenience. These included power windows, power steering, air conditioning, and a premium sound system. While it may lack some of the modern amenities found in newer cars, it still offers a luxurious and refined driving experience.

Engine & Transmission

Under the long bonnet, the Mercedes-Benz 280 SE coupe houses a 3.5-litre V8 engine, producing 197hp and 286Nm. This engine was a significant upgrade from the inline-six engines of its predecessors. Coupled with a 4-speed automatic transmission, the V8 engine provides a refined and responsive driving experience.

The fuel-injected engine allowed the coupe to accelerate from 0 to 100km/h in 11.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 210km/h, which was impressive for its time.

Driving Impressions

The 280 SE coupe is a joy to drive, offering a blend of comfort, luxury, and performance. The car handles well, with precise steering and a stable ride. The engine delivers a satisfying soundtrack, making every journey an enjoyable experience. The car’s suspension is tuned for a comfortable ride, absorbing bumps and imperfections in the road with ease.
