New Road Project In Dubai To Slash Travel Time By Up To 70%: Includes 4 New Bridges

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) proudly announced the completion of 50% of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads Intersection Improvement Project. This significant infrastructure development, comprising four bridges spanning a total of 2,874 meters, is designed to efficiently handle a traffic capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour.

The project includes road works covering 7 kilometres, enhancements of surface intersections, street lighting, traffic signs, traffic systems, rainwater drainage, and an irrigation network.

Currently, the contractor is actively engaged in casting bridge walls, installing iron supports, road expansion, lighting installations, and rainwater drainage network setup.

Four Bridges for Improved Connectivity

The project involves the construction of four bridges with specific functionalities:

943-meter Bridge: Located at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street, accommodating 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions, facilitating traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.

601-meter Bridge: Serving traffic moving from Garn Al Sabkha Street Westwards towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Northwards, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.

664-meter Bridge: Ensuring smooth traffic flow from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Northwards towards Al Yalayis Road in the direction of Jebel Ali Port, accommodating approximately 3,200 vehicles per hour.

666-meter Bridge: Facilitating traffic flow from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to the entrances of Dubai Production City, with a capacity of around 3,200 vehicles per hour.

Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, emphasized the project’s role in upgrading Garn Al Sabkha Street. This crucial artery links Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, aiming to ensure seamless traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, and Al Asayel Street.

Al Tayer added, “Once opened, the project will significantly reduce travel distances and journey times. For example, it will cut down the journey time by 40% for traffic heading from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Sharjah.”

The Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads Intersection Improvement Project is an integral part of RTA’s Master Plan to upgrade strategic road networks. These developments bolster Dubai’s transportation system, supporting numerous developmental projects and accommodating both current and future traffic volumes.
