Second generation Toyota 86 and BRZ tipped for 2021

Can you believe the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ is turning six this year? The Scion FR-S would as well but that’s long gone. That means their close to the end of their current generation, and indeed it as information has found its way online claiming the second generation Japanese coupes will debut in 2021.

Reports also suggest the new Toyota 86 and sister model will ship with a bigger engine. Up from 2.0-litres to 2.4-litres, it’s unknown if the engine will remain naturally aspirated or will receive some form of forced induction. One can dream, right?

Further reading revealed the next-gen models will have an even lower centre of gravity allowing for increased cornering performance.

Expect a wide range of safety features including Toyota Saftey Sense, a new infotainment system, spruced up interior with new materials and a refreshed exterior.

2018 Toyota 86 models

Current models pack a 2.0-litre four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine rated at 197 horsepower. This compact boxer motor can be had with either had win GTX or VTX trim with the former available with an engaging six-speed manual while the latter is equipped with a 6-speed automatic.

As for the Subaru BRZ, an identical boxer engine drives the rear wheels with a choice of either a manual or automatic transmission.

Depending on what gearbox is equipped, the coupes sprint from 0-100 km/h in 7.6 to 8.2 seconds before hitting a top speed of 210-226 km/h.

Both models received a minor facelift for 2017 along with small handling tweaks. While both models apper identical, they actually have unique front bumpers.
