Summary

This 9-year-old Ford Explorer XLT is a quintessential choice for families in the GCC, offering a robust V6 powertrain that avoids the complexities of smaller turbocharged units. With a mileage of 151,000 km, it sits right on the expected average for a regional workhorse of this age, suggesting it has been used consistently for the long-distance highway commutes common in the UAE. The black exterior remains a highly liquid choice in the local market, ensuring steady demand when it comes time to upgrade. As an XLT trim, it balances essential family comforts with the proven durability of Ford's naturally aspirated 3.5L engine, making it a reliable companion for cross-emirate road trips.

This Car vs Other 2017 Ford Explorers

With 151,000 km on the odometer, this Explorer has covered approximately 16,700 km per year, which is significantly lower than the GCC annual average of 20,000–25,000 km. This makes it a standout option compared to other 2017 models that often exceed 200,000 km by this stage. The black finish is a top-tier resale color in the UAE, providing a distinct advantage over less conventional shades at trade-in time.

XLT vs Lower Trims

Stepping up to the XLT trim from the base model adds critical conveniences for the local climate, including intelligent access with push-button start and a 10-way power-adjustable driver's seat. It also grants access to a more sophisticated LED lighting signature and the Terrain Management System, which is essential for weekend visits to the gravel plains or light sand trails.

Explorer vs Segment Rivals

The Explorer leads rivals like the Honda Pilot and Toyota Highlander in pure towing capability, handling up to 2,268 kg with ease. Its American-engineered cabin is wider than many Japanese competitors, providing more shoulder room for seven passengers during long drives. Additionally, the Ford offers a more intuitive Terrain Management System that simplifies driving on varied surfaces like wet sand or loose gravel.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 3.5L V6 typically averages around 13.0 L/100km in mixed GCC conditions, though highway cruising between cities can see this improve significantly. Ford maintains an extensive authorized service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, ensuring parts are always readily available. While American-spec vehicles can see slightly steeper depreciation than GCC-spec equivalents, the Explorer's massive popularity in the region ensures a very active secondary market.

Performance & Capability

The 290 hp V6 engine provides smooth, linear power that is perfectly suited for overtaking on the E11 or E311 highways. The Intelligent AWD system includes a specialized Terrain Management dial, allowing you to optimize traction for Sand, Mud, or Snow at the turn of a switch. With a 7.8-inch ground clearance, it confidently handles steep speed humps and unpaved access roads without concern.

Comfort & Cabin

The three-row configuration provides genuine space for seven, with dedicated rear climate controls and vents to ensure all passengers stay cool during the peak summer months. Interior insulation is a highlight, keeping the cabin quiet and shielded from exterior heat and road noise during long-distance desert drives. The XLT cabin features durable materials designed to withstand the rigors of family life and the intense local sun.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes Ford's AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control and Curve Control, which are vital for maintaining stability during sudden maneuvers on sandy or wet roads. The XLT trim features a comprehensive airbag system including Safety Canopy side-curtain protection for all three rows. For highway safety, it includes SOS Post-Crash Alert and a standard rearview camera to aid in parking this large SUV in tight city spaces.

The bottom line

This Explorer is an ideal match for a growing family seeking a reliable, high-capacity SUV that hasn't been over-driven, offering a great balance of features and proven V6 longevity.
