Summary

This Nissan Patrol Super Safari is a definitive choice for enthusiasts seeking a rugged, body-on-frame icon that excels where modern crossovers fail. The gold exterior is a highly desirable color in the GCC market, offering excellent heat reflection and maintaining strong resale appeal across the region. With its legendary 4.8L inline-six VTC engine, this vehicle provides the mechanical simplicity and durability required for serious desert expeditions. For a 8-year-old vehicle, this specific example represents a reliable entry into the Super Safari heritage, bridging the gap between a daily commuter and an unstoppable off-road tool. It remains one of the few vehicles that commands immediate respect on both the Sheikh Zayed Road and the deepest dunes of the Empty Quarter.

This Car vs Other 2018 Patrols

At 180,000 km, this vehicle's mileage is average for an 8-year-old SUV in the GCC, where long-distance highway travel between emirates is routine. While many modern Patrols prioritize road-biased luxury, the 2018 Super Safari retains the heavy-duty ladder-frame chassis and mechanical lockers favored by purists. The gold finish is a strategic advantage for local buyers, as it hides desert dust exceptionally well and historically holds its value better than darker shades in the used market.

SUPER SAFARI vs Lower Trims

The Super Safari trim elevates the base Safari experience with premium tan leather upholstery, wood-grain interior accents, and a factory-integrated refrigerated cool box—essential for GCC summers. It further adds a power sunroof, navigation, and a rear-view camera as standard, features often missing or aftermarket in lower-spec variants. Mechanically, the Super Safari is distinguished by its unique exterior styling, including the iconic decals and machine-cut 17-inch alloy wheels.

Patrol vs Segment Rivals

The Super Safari's primary rival, the Toyota Land Cruiser 70-series, offers similar durability but lacks the refined interior comfort and highway cruising stability found in the Nissan. While the Jeep Wrangler provides comparable off-road agility, the Patrol leads significantly in cabin volume and its massive 175-litre fuel capacity, which is vital for long-range desert crossings without extra jerry cans. Its naturally aspirated inline-six is also widely regarded as more reliable under extreme heat than the turbocharged engines found in newer European competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption averages approximately 17.2 L/100km, reflecting the heavy-duty nature of the 4.8L VTC engine in GCC stop-start traffic. Maintenance is straightforward, with an extensive network of Nissan authorized service centers across all GCC states, ensuring parts are affordable and readily available even in remote areas. The Super Safari enjoys exceptional value retention, often depreciating at a slower rate than the newer Y62 generation due to its 'bulletproof' reputation and high demand among local off-road enthusiasts.

Performance & Capability

The 4.8L inline-six engine produces a robust 280 hp and 451 Nm of torque, specifically tuned for low-end grunt rather than pure top speed. Its 215 mm ground clearance and short overhangs provide an impressive 37-degree approach angle, allowing it to navigate steep dunes and rocky wadis with ease. The 5-speed automatic transmission is paired with a manual-selector 4WD system, featuring a dedicated low-range transfer case and a locking rear differential for maximum traction in soft sand.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside, the Super Safari offers a 7-seat configuration with flexible folding options to maximize cargo space for camping gear. The cabin is specifically engineered for the Middle Eastern climate, featuring a powerful dual-zone air conditioning system with dedicated rear vents that maintain cool temperatures even in 45°C heat. The tan leather seats are wide and supportive, designed for long-distance comfort during cross-border road trips, while the factory-fitted cool box keeps beverages chilled throughout the drive.

Safety

Safety features on the Super Safari include standard dual front airbags, an Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), and Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) to ensure stable stopping on varied surfaces. For the highway, it features Cruise Control and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) to alert the driver of heat-induced pressure changes. Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) comes standard, providing an essential layer of electronic stability during high-speed highway driving and on slippery gravel tracks.

The bottom line

For the GCC buyer who values mechanical longevity and off-road heritage over modern digital gadgets, this Super Safari is the ideal desert-ready workhorse.
