Mercedes Benz GLS580 AMG

Highlights

• 483 hp from a 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine
• 0–100 km/h in 4.9 seconds
• 3,500 kg maximum braked towing capacity

Summary

This 2024 GLS 580 offers a refined V8 alternative for those who find the GLS 450 underpowered but don't need the aggression of a full AMG 63. With mileage sitting just over 50,000 km, it has been driven slightly more than the typical UAE luxury cruiser, making it an accessible entry point into the flagship 'S-Class of SUVs'. The blue exterior is a sophisticated, high-resale alternative to the standard monochrome palette, performing exceptionally well in the secondary market. As an American spec vehicle, it offers the high equipment levels common in the US market while remaining mechanically compatible with the regional Mercedes-Benz service network. This is the ideal choice for a family requiring seven-seat luxury and effortless highway overtaking power.

This Car vs Other 2024 GLS 580s

While typical UAE annual mileage for luxury SUVs averages 25,000 km, this example sits at 50,607 km after one year, placing it on the higher side of the local market average. However, this is offset by the vehicle's newer model year and the high-demand blue metallic finish, which commands better resale interest than less common custom colors. The American specification typically provides a more comprehensive list of standard tech features compared to base-spec imports.

AMG vs Lower Trims

Stepping up to the GLS 580 with the AMG Line exterior adds significant presence over the 450, including 21-inch AMG twin 5-spoke wheels and more aggressive front and rear bumper styling. Inside, you benefit from standard Nappa leather, five-zone climate control, and ventilated multicontour front seats with massage—features that are often expensive options on lower trims. The inclusion of the Burmester surround sound system and the AMG sport steering wheel further separates this trim from the standard configuration.

GLS580 vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the BMW X7, the GLS 580 leads in second-row legroom and total cargo volume, providing 493 litres behind the third row—significantly more than the Range Rover. Its 4.0-litre V8 biturbo offers a smoother, more linear power delivery than the six-cylinder rivals in this price bracket. The MBUX infotainment system remains the benchmark for voice control and ease of use during fast-moving GCC highway traffic.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for this V8 powertrain typically averages 13.7 L/100km, though expect this to rise to 16.8 L/100km in Dubai or Riyadh's stop-start traffic. The 90-litre fuel tank ensures a substantial cruising range for long-distance trips between Emirates or across GCC borders. Mercedes-Benz maintains a massive authorized service presence across the UAE and Saudi Arabia, with minor service intervals typically recommended every 15,000 km or 12 months. As a high-trim V8, it retains value better than the base 450, though American spec units generally depreciate 12-15% annually in the local market.

Performance & Capability

The 483 hp V8 biturbo engine, aided by an EQ Boost mild-hybrid system, propels this large SUV to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, ensuring effortless highway merging. The standard AIRMATIC air suspension adjusts in real-time to road conditions, providing a 'magic carpet' ride across well-paved highways and additional ground clearance for light off-road duties. With a 3,500 kg towing capacity, it is one of the most capable luxury cruisers for transporting boats or trailers across the region.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is a true seven-seater with a power-folding third row that comfortably accommodates adults for shorter trips. For the GCC climate, the five-zone climate control ensures every passenger has dedicated cooling, while ventilated front seats are essential for summer comfort. Acoustic glass and high-grade insulation keep the interior remarkably quiet even at high highway speeds, making it a premier choice for long-distance family travel.

Safety

Standard safety equipment includes a comprehensive ADAS suite with Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and a 360-degree camera system that is indispensable for parking a vehicle of this size. The Distronic Plus adaptive cruise control is particularly effective on long desert highways, reducing driver fatigue. As an American spec model, it carries a full complement of airbags and advanced crash-protection systems designed for stringent safety standards.

The bottom line

This 2024 GLS 580 AMG Line is a perfectly balanced luxury SUV for a buyer who wants V8 performance and flagship comfort without the premium price of a new GCC-showroom unit.
