Bentley opens up the range for plug-in models

Over the years, Bentley has dropped subtle hints that plug-in hybrid drive trains will sneak their way into the bespoke lineup whether we like it or not.

Bentayga models are expected to receive the hybrid drivetrain as early as 2018 with the Continental GT to follow shortly along with the rest of the lineup in subsequent years.

Way back in 2014, Bentley revealed a plug-in Mulsanne concept in Bejing paired with a V8 twin-turbo petrol motor. It’s estimated that the two combined would churn out 500 horses, however, the luxury brand has hinted at a V6 twin turbo model in future models.

As for the actual plug-in system, the British firm hasn’t finalised the details just yet although a lithium-ion battery pack is presumed to be installed to power said system. Recharging the system is similar to other hybrids, simply charge it at home or though Brake Regenerative Technology.

Hybrid models from the brand are to be equipped with a unique drive mode selector where the driver can choose between petrol only, pure electricity or a mix of the two.

What about Autonomous driving capabilities? Wolfgang Dürheimer CEO of the brand made it clear that that technology is not on the table at any point as they want to keep the essence of driving a Bentley in the hands of the driver.
