Infiniti reveal the world’s first VC-T Engine

Around the world, Motoring personnel and enthusiasts are claiming that Infiniti’s brand new and first Variable Compression Ratio Engine is the most advanced motor ever to exist. Simply known as the VC-T engine, the Japanese brand has been brainstorming and slowly building this mechanical wonder since 1998; that’s 16 years!

With a displacement of 2-litres and comprised of four cylinders, VC-T engines produce around 270 horsepower with 390 Nm of torque thanks in part to a turbocharger. Infiniti states the new engine is 27% more economical than a standard petrol powerplant and just as efficient as its diesel counterpart. They also say that it tips the scales much lower than other four-cylinder motors.

But what makes this engine so special? Thanks to revolutionary engine technology, each piston can be electronically controlled to specific heights in turn leading to better fuel economy as less substance would need to be thrown around. For example, by adjusting the engine to react to high-performance driving or minimum fuel consumption, unique systems will change the compression and displacement ratio to 8:1 and 14:1 respectively.

Set to debut in 2018, Infiniti hasn’t finalised what vehicle will be the first to receive the engine. Some sources point towards the QX50 while others point towards the QX80. The QX50 seems plausible as the VC-T will replace the 3.5-litre V6.

Infiniti’s revolutionary new engine is ready to showcase its presence at the upcoming Paris Motor Show starting from the 29th of September.

Just to clarify, this isn’t the world’s first engine of this nature as it’s history dates back to the 1920’s.
