Mercedes beat Tesla to an all electric truck

Tesla is the dominant auto manufacturer when it comes to all-electric vehicles. With consistent rumours floating around that they were expanding into various automobile segments, one that stood out was the heavy goods market. But alas they have been bested by non-other than Mercedes-Benz.

By stripping out the petrol components, Mercedes has attached two electric motors instead. Combined they generate 335 horsepower with 1000 Nm of torque. 200 km is the trucks attainable distance before needing a charge. Once they have run out of juice, they can be fully charged in two to three hours.

As it’s still in its testing phase, expect the German brand to launch higher capacity batteries with extended range to be removed and attached with ease.

Fully-electric Mercedes truck cabs are to launch within the next five years with an unconfirmed price and will be able to pull up 26 metric tons in freight.

Announced alongside the big truck, Mercedes also took the time to demonstrate the Mitsubishi Fuso Canter E-Cell electric light truck which has already completed tests in parts of Europe and is fast tracked to enter production soon and made available to the public earlier than the rig.

Electric Fuso models are powered by two 48 kWh battery packs mounted either side of the vehicle and are capable of generating 147 horsepower and 100 kms of driving on a single charge. It may not seem much. However, it’s still in its infancy. These E-Cell light trucks can be charged up tp 80% in one hour.
