Nissan Patrol Review: The Ideal Go-Anywhere Family SUV

Nissan’s flagship offering, the Patrol, is not just another SUV on sale in the UAE. Because of its exceptional capabilities, it is one of the few that people worship. The Nissan Patrol is a luxury full-size SUV that can handle the everyday runabout and take you on an adventure during the weekends—a true SUV that can do it all. Here is our review of the Nissan Patrol.

History

The Nissan Patrol’s history dates back to the post-traumatic era of World War II when Nissan started producing the Patrol with an engine sourced from a bus. During that time, there was very little emphasis on comfort, highlighting its utilitarian character.

However, over the years, the Patrol has evolved into a flagship luxury SUV, rivalling the likes of the Toyota Land Cruiser. Read the complete history of Nissan Patrol and its generations.

Exterior Design

This Nissan Patrol is adorned in a grey exterior paint scheme, enhancing the SUV’s large proportions. The colour also complements the chrome trim pieces peppered all around. Being the top-spec trim, the SUV boasts 20-inch dual-tone alloy wheels.

From the side, the Patrol’s 3,075mm wheelbase gives you a clear idea of the spacious real estate on the inside. Nissan has also done a brilliant job of maintaining the Patrol’s premium looks without any cladding.

Interiors

The top-spec trims come with all the bells and whistles. Additionally, this particular Patrol features tan upholstery with quilted leather, a standard fitment for the SE Platinum City variant. This makes the interior appealing and luxurious.

Despite not having a sunroof, the Patrol’s large windows and an even larger D-pillar glass let in enough light into the cabin to give it an airy feeling. Speaking of an airy atmosphere, it boasts 3-zone climate control and powered seats, including the third row.

Technology

The Patrol comes with a whole host of features, including two displays: a 7-inch TFT instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch infotainment screen placed in the centre of the dash. Additionally, passengers in the middle row get to enjoy content courtesy of dual 10.1-inch screens offered as standard on the trim.

Engine & Transmission

Our test vehicle was equipped with a 4.0-litre V6 naturally-aspirated petrol engine mated to a seven-speed automatic. The array of off-road hardware continues underneath, including a 4×4 transfer case, locking differentials, and an electronic limited-slip differential.

  • Max power: 275hp
  • Peak Torque: 396Nm

Driving Impressions

The V6 engine is refined, and the 7-speed automatic complements it well. As a torque converter unit, the gear changes feel unhurried, which aligns well with the nature of the engine.

However, the powertrain, together with the drivetrain, has enough oomph to propel this behemoth to good speeds. The suspension manages to iron out all the undulations on the road with grace.

off-road

The massive weight unfortunately hampers its performance around bends with a load of body roll, as one would expect considering the proportions. The steering too feels a little bit disconnected.

Off-road

In our Nissan Patrol review, we couldn’t take it much off-road. However, what we can confirm is that this SUV can traverse any terrain with ease. The excellent terrain management system, along with the off-road hardware, works seamlessly to conquer any terrain like it’s a casual Sunday afternoon. For those seeking to tackle the dunes, yes, the Patrol can do it and do it well!

Safety

Nissan offers the latest suite of active safety features on the Nissan Patrol. This includes all the various functions associated with the Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. Additionally, the Patrol is equipped with passive safety features, including 8 airbags.
