On this high option Lariat FX-4 Atlas model you will find an upgraded T-Rex Grille, a rear-view camera, performance exhaust, air compressor, LED light bar on the front grille, cooled/heated seats, blind spot warning & Ford’s larger touchscreen sync 3 information system.
Powering the F150 is Ford’s fantastic 5.0L V8 engine, with 385hp and 525Nm of torque delivered through the six speed select shift transmission. As with the standard F-150 coming equipped with a three-way four-wheel drive transfer case and an electronic locking rear differential. What is immediately apparent is the way the F-150 tackles the sand dunes, foregoing bouncing from dune to dune like the much lighter Jeep Wrangler in favour of ploughing through obstacles!
Behind the wheel it is surprisingly easy to manoeuvre, smooth inputs through the steering and low-end torque (with peak results achieved at 4250rpm) allowing the F-150 to maintain its momentum across tricky terrain at low speeds. Feathering the throttle with a brute of this size doesn’t have much of an effect, but inputs through the right foot are responded to vigilantly, and rarely does it hint at struggling when you make it into the deeper sand.
On the inside is where the current F-150 has evolved in the most pronounced ways. Ford has kept the beltline low, which helps connect the driver to the road from the inside of the F-150, where the angular shapes have won out over the round. We like how the tall, bevelled vents on the centre console reinforce its mass. The shapes and controls all seem scaled and sized for big-handed operators, with more hard buttons restored to the dash even on versions equipped with the My Ford Touch screen interface (now replaced by Sync 3 for this 2016 model)
