Summary

This Kia Sportage EX offers a balanced entry into the crossover segment with a focused feature set that makes it a smart daily commuter. With its all-wheel drive system, it provides extra stability on rain-slicked city roads or gravel tracks during weekend escapes. The mileage is consistent with average use in the UAE market, suggesting the vehicle has been regularly utilized for highway transit rather than sitting idle in the heat. Finished in a bold red, it stands out in a sea of monochrome traffic while benefiting from the widespread parts availability that Kia is known for across the region. As a practical five-seater with a reputation for mechanical simplicity, it remains one of the most straightforward ownership prospects for buyers in the GCC.

This Car vs Other 2017 Sportages

At 119,000 km, this Sportage sits comfortably within the expected range for a 2017 model in the UAE, where annual highway-heavy commutes often result in 20,000 km or more per year. The red exterior is a distinct choice that offers a more vibrant alternative to the typical white and silver fleet, while still maintaining respectable resale appeal in the local market. Choosing an American spec model often allows for a more competitive entry price point while still utilizing the same mechanical components widely serviced by local specialists.

EX vs Lower Trims

The EX trim is a significant step up from the base LX, providing high-value upgrades that GCC buyers prioritize for daily comfort. It swaps the standard 17-inch rims for 18-inch alloy wheels and adds essential visibility features like front fog lights and heated side mirrors. Inside, the EX replaces cloth seating with leather upholstery and introduces dual-zone automatic climate control, allowing the driver and passenger to manage the intense summer heat with independent temperature settings.

Sportage vs Segment Rivals

The Sportage competes directly with the Toyota RAV4 and Hyundai Tucson, leading the group in terms of standard cabin ergonomics and interior material quality for the price. While rivals may offer larger engine displacements, the Kia focuses on city-friendly efficiency and a more manageable turning circle of just 10.6 meters. Its boot capacity is highly competitive, offering 591 litres of space with the rear seats upright, which is often more usable for family grocery runs than its more expensive peers.

Running Costs & Resale

Real-world fuel consumption for the 2.0L AWD powertrain typically averages around 8.5 to 9.2 L/100km, making it efficient for long-distance cruising between Emirates. Kia enjoys one of the most robust authorized service networks in the GCC, ensuring that parts like filters, brake pads, and AC components are readily available in any major city from Dubai to Riyadh. While American spec vehicles generally experience a slightly higher initial depreciation compared to GCC spec cars, the Sportage's high demand in the secondary market helps protect its value over time.

Performance & Capability

The 2.0L four-cylinder engine delivers a reliable 163 hp, paired with a smooth 6-speed automatic transmission that is tuned for highway efficiency and smooth gear changes. The All Wheel Drive system includes a locking function that splits torque 50/50 between the axles, providing confident traction if you find yourself on soft sand or loose gravel during a desert outing. With a ground clearance of approximately 172 mm, it easily clears common urban obstacles and speed humps while maintaining a planted, car-like feel at highway speeds.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for long-distance regional travel, featuring a 7-inch touchscreen with integrated smartphone connectivity and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Rear passengers benefit from dedicated cooling vents, a vital feature for maintaining comfort during the peak GCC summer months. The layout is versatile, with 60/40 split-folding rear seats that expand the cargo area to nearly 1,500 litres, perfect for transporting outdoor gear or flat-packed furniture.

Safety

Standard safety equipment on the EX trim includes six airbags, electronic stability control, and a rearview camera that simplifies parking in tight mall spaces. The vehicle features hill-start assist and downhill brake control, which are particularly useful when navigating steep ramps or uneven terrain. This generation of Sportage was built with a high-strength steel chassis, providing a rigid safety cell that has earned top ratings in international crash testing.

The bottom line

This Sportage EX AWD is a practical and stylish choice for small families or professionals who need a dependable, easy-to-maintain crossover that handles both city traffic and regional highways with ease.
