Convertible BMW i8 confirmed for 2018

Originally showcased some four years ago, a convertible BMW i8 has been on the minds of those lusting after one for some time. It was expected that one would show up earlier in the year at the 2016 Consumers Electronic Show were it was “officially” announced.

Apprentently, that wasn’t the case, as it was an unofficial announcement and served more as a look into the future of BMW’s hybrid lineup. Now it’s official though according to BMW’s CEO Harald Krueger, and that’s not all.

In convertible form, the i8 is expected to be equipped with longer-range battery paired with an upgraded electric motor to provide more power. If that is the case, we presume that coupe style models are to receive the updated power units too. No word is mentioned if the three-cylinder 1.5-litre petrol motor will be updated or if they’ll replace it with something slightly larger.

No radical design changes are set for the introduction of the convertible BMW i8 aside from the roof that is. Interior and exterior options will remain identical.

Although it’s said to launch in 2018, it’s unconfirmed if it will launch as a 2018 model or 2019 and you can expect a slightly higher price tag than fixed-roof models.

BMW also took the time to unveil the updated BMW i3 with an upgraded battery capable of travelling 300 km on a single charge, which is a significant increase from the 190 km previously attainable.
