UAE’s first driverless car circulates Downtown Dubai

No matter what way you look at it, driverless cars are imminent unless you’re living on a remote island then maybe vehicles without a person behind the wheel is still a future prospect. Around the world, Tesla, Nissan, BMW, Mclaren and many others are hard at work at creating vehicles with these systems.

Those cars are being tested overseas and catching a glimpse in the UAE is a rare sight. That doesn’t matter as we to have our very own driverless vehicle testing happening right here in Dubai. Next time you visit Downtown Dubai keep your eyes peeled for EZ10.

EZ10 is an all-electric shuttle bus, which is free to all passengers. Currently running a short distance of a mere 700 metres, this electronically assisted vehicle provides a touch of comfort and air conditioning to those travelling from Mohammed bin Rashid Boulevard/Finacial Centre Street intersection to Vida Hotel in Downtown Dubai.

Currently, in phase 1, the Roads and Transport Authority have big plans for the driverless vehicle in Dubai including expanding the route to cover the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Souq Al Baher and the recently opened Dubai Opera.

EZ10 is capable of a top speed of 40 km/h but prefers to cruise around at 25 km/h. Scooting around with the air con, EZ10 doesn’t need to charge for at least four hours. Without the cool breeze blowing inside, it can last up to 10 hours, however, it’s not a good idea to get in there. 10 passengers can fit inside and EZ10 is special-needs friendly.
