Summary

This 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser VXR represents the final and most refined production year of the legendary 200 Series, making it a highly sought-after buy in the GCC. Finished in Midnight Black, a top-tier color for resale, this VXR trim offers a significant luxury jump over the GXR with its premium leather and advanced off-road hardware. With its 5.7L V8—a discontinued powertrain in the newer generation—this model is favored by purists for its unmatched desert reliability and highway presence. For a GCC buyer, the primary consideration is its mechanical simplicity and the massive 138-litre fuel capacity, which is ideal for long-distance cruising between emirates or cross-border travel.

This Car vs Other 2021 Land Cruisers

With 135,000 km, this vehicle sits at the expected average for a 2021 model in the GCC, where annual highway use typically reaches 25,000 km. The Midnight Black exterior is a high-demand resale color in the UAE and Saudi markets, providing a clear advantage over niche colors. As a 2021 model, it benefits from the latest software updates and interior refinements introduced before the generational shift.

VXR vs Lower Trims

The VXR is the luxury flagship, adding essential GCC comforts like ventilated second-row seats and a four-zone climate control system not found on the GXR. It also introduces the 14-speaker JBL Synthesis audio system and a 360-degree Multi-Terrain Monitor for easier parking and off-roading. Crucially, the VXR features Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS), which provides a noticeably smoother ride on Dubai's highways compared to the standard setup.

Land Cruiser vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Nissan Patrol, the Land Cruiser leads in long-term residual value and offers a more robust 138-litre dual-tank system for superior range. While rivals may offer more modern infotainment, the Land Cruiser’s naturally aspirated 5.7L V8 is widely considered more durable for extreme desert heat and heavy towing. Its body-on-frame construction remains the gold standard for durability across the GCC’s varying terrains.

Running Costs & Resale

The Land Cruiser VXR retains roughly 75-80% of its value after three years in the UAE, outperforming almost every other luxury SUV in its segment. Real-world fuel consumption for the 5.7L V8 averages around 15.7 L/100km, with highway driving benefiting from the 8-speed automatic's tall gearing. Service centers are available in every major GCC city, and parts availability is the highest of any vehicle in the region, ensuring low long-term maintenance overhead.

Performance & Capability

The 362 hp 5.7L V8 is engineered for high-torque tasks, enabling a verified 3,500 kg towing capacity that makes it a favorite for weekend boat or trailer hauling. Off-road, the standard Crawl Control and Multi-Terrain Select systems allow the driver to navigate deep sand and dunes with professional-grade precision. On the highway, the V8 provides effortless overtaking power, reaching a top speed of 220 km/h with high-speed stability provided by its heavy-duty chassis.

Comfort & Cabin

The 8-seat cabin is designed for the Gulf climate, featuring a factory-integrated cooler box in the center console and a high-output AC system with 28 individual vents. The VXR trim includes perforated premium leather and a power-folding third row, allowing for quick transitions between passenger hauling and cargo storage. Acoustic glass and thick insulation keep the interior remarkably quiet, even when cruising at 140 km/h on exposed desert motorways.

Safety

The 2021 VXR comes standard with the full Toyota Safety Sense suite, featuring Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and Lane Departure Alert for safer long-distance travel. It is equipped with 10 airbags and a Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, which are essential for navigating multi-lane GCC highways. The vehicle also features a 360-degree camera system and front/rear parking sensors to manage its large footprint in tight urban environments.

The bottom line

For the buyer who wants the ultimate version of the indestructible 200 Series, this black VXR offers the perfect balance of luxury and legendary V8 reliability. It is a blue-chip automotive investment that remains as capable in the Empty Quarter as it is on Sheikh Zayed Road.
