Summary

This 2026 BYD Leopard 5 ULTRA represents the absolute cutting edge of the plug-in hybrid SUV market, offering a specialized blend of immense power and high-tech efficiency that is perfectly suited for the modern GCC landscape. With an incredible 680 hp output, it provides supercar-level acceleration in a rugged, go-anywhere body that stands out from more traditional luxury SUVs found on UAE roads. The extremely low mileage means this vehicle is effectively in showroom condition, offering a significant advantage for a buyer looking to skip the long waiting lists often associated with high-demand PHEV models. Its sophisticated all-wheel-drive system and advanced energy management make it a versatile choice for both the high-speed commutes between Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the weekend excursions into more challenging terrain. For a GCC buyer, the grey exterior is a strategic choice, offering a professional aesthetic while maintaining strong resale demand in a market that favors neutral, heat-reflective tones. This ULTRA trim is the most comprehensive version of the vehicle, ensuring that every possible convenience and performance feature is already included for the next owner.

This Car vs Other 2026 Leopard 5s

When comparing this specific unit to other 2026 models in the market, the primary advantage is the exceptionally low mileage of just 1900 km. In the GCC, where the average annual mileage often exceeds 25,000 km due to frequent inter-city travel, finding a vehicle that has barely completed its break-in period is a rare opportunity. This low usage ensures that all mechanical components, especially the complex hybrid battery system and the 1.5L turbocharged engine, are in pristine, like-new condition. The grey exterior is another highlight, as it is one of the most sought-after colors in the region for its ability to hide desert dust while looking sophisticated under the bright Middle Eastern sun. Most 2026 models currently available are just beginning their life on the road, but this ULTRA trim stands out as a top-tier example that has been kept in peak condition since its very recent manufacture. Choosing this vehicle over a higher-mileage alternative provides peace of mind regarding the longevity of the plug-in hybrid architecture and the interior electronics.

ULTRA vs Lower Trims

The ULTRA trim is the flagship specification for the Leopard 5, adding several layers of luxury and technical capability that are missing in the lower variants. While the base models are well-equipped, the ULTRA specifically enhances the cabin experience with higher-grade materials and a more comprehensive suite of driver-focused technologies. One of the most significant upgrades in this trim is the integration of the advanced DiSus-P Intelligent Hydraulic Body Control System, which provides a level of ride comfort and adjustable clearance that lower trims cannot match. You also get an upgraded premium audio system and enhanced seat functions, including multi-point massage and superior ventilation, which are essential for staying comfortable during the intense summer months in the GCC. The ULTRA trim also includes the full array of exterior cameras and sensors, providing a 360-degree transparent chassis view that is invaluable when navigating tight parking spots or technical off-road trails. Buying the ULTRA means you are getting the most advanced version of BYD's off-road technology, ensuring the best possible resale value in the future.

Leopard 5 vs Segment Rivals

The BYD Leopard 5 competes in an increasingly crowded segment of electrified off-roaders, but it holds a distinct power advantage over traditional rivals like the Land Rover Defender or the Jeep Wrangler 4xe. With 680 hp, it significantly outmuscles most competitors, allowing for a 0-100 km/h sprint in approximately 4.8 seconds, which is nearly unheard of for a vehicle with genuine ladder-frame durability. Its dedicated off-road platform, the DMO (Dual Mode Off-road), was designed specifically to handle the torque of electric motors while maintaining the ruggedness required for desert driving. Unlike many European rivals that focus primarily on on-road luxury, the Leopard 5 features triple differential locks, giving it a level of mechanical grip that is superior for soft sand conditions found in the Liwa or Fossil Rock areas. Additionally, the hybrid range provides a massive advantage over purely electric SUVs, as it eliminates range anxiety during long cross-border drives to Oman or Saudi Arabia. The interior technology suite is also more advanced than many established Japanese rivals, offering a more digitized and connected experience for tech-savvy drivers.

Running Costs & Resale

Operating a PHEV like the Leopard 5 in the GCC offers significant savings, particularly in stop-and-go city traffic in Riyadh or Dubai where the electric motors can handle the bulk of the work. The 1.5L engine acts as a highly efficient generator and power source, leading to fuel consumption figures that are far lower than traditional V6 or V8 SUVs in this class. Maintenance is streamlined through growing authorized service networks across the UAE and the wider GCC, with service intervals typically focusing on the internal combustion elements and cooling systems every 10,000 to 15,000 km. As a Chinese spec vehicle in the UAE market, it is important to note that while third-party specialist support is excellent, buyers should verify service package compatibility with local distributors. Resale value for BYD's high-end models has remained strong as the brand's reputation for battery durability grows globally. In the GCC, the high power output and luxury features of the ULTRA trim help mitigate the standard first-year depreciation, making it a more stable investment than entry-level luxury crossovers.

Performance & Capability

The performance of the Leopard 5 is dominated by its 680 hp and 760 Nm of torque, which provides effortless acceleration regardless of the load or the incline. This power is managed by an intelligent All Wheel Drive system that can shift torque between wheels in milliseconds, a feature that is incredibly useful when climbing dunes or overtaking on fast-moving highways. The vehicle features a dedicated low-range mode and specialized terrain modes for sand, mud, and rocks, making it a legitimate tool for the GCC's diverse landscapes. With a ground clearance that can be adjusted thanks to its hydraulic suspension, it can clear significant obstacles that would stop a standard crossover in its tracks. The 1.5L engine ensures that even when the battery is low, the vehicle maintains consistent performance, which is vital for maintaining high speeds on long desert stretches. Its towing capacity is also impressive, allowing for the transport of jet skis or trailers for weekend adventures. The transition between electric and gasoline power is virtually seamless, providing a quiet luxury experience in the city and raw power when it is needed most.

Comfort & Cabin

Inside the Leopard 5 ULTRA, the focus is on a high-tech, high-comfort environment that accommodates five passengers in total luxury. The seats are upholstered in premium materials and feature robust cooling and ventilation, which are absolute necessities for maintaining comfort when outside temperatures exceed 45°C. The dashboard is dominated by three massive screens, including a dedicated display for the front passenger, ensuring everyone stays entertained during long trips across the Emirates. The air conditioning system is specifically designed for high-performance cooling, with multiple zones and rear-seat vents to ensure the cabin reaches a comfortable temperature quickly after being parked in the sun. Noise insulation is a standout feature, with acoustic glass and heavy dampening that keeps the roar of the highway and the heat of the desert at bay. The 5-door layout provides easy access to a spacious second row with ample legroom, while the boot is designed to hold large amounts of gear for camping or shopping. Touches like the refrigerated center console box further enhance the GCC-specific utility of this premium SUV.

Safety

Safety in the Leopard 5 ULTRA is managed by a comprehensive suite of active and passive systems designed to protect passengers in all driving scenarios. The most advanced ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems) come standard, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality, which is a life-saver in heavy traffic on Sheikh Zayed Road. Blind-spot monitoring and lane-keeping assist provide an extra layer of security on fast-moving multi-lane highways, where visibility can sometimes be a challenge. The vehicle is built on a high-strength steel frame designed to absorb impacts while protecting the high-voltage battery pack from damage. Multiple airbags, including side curtains and knee bags, provide 360-degree protection for all five occupants. For those who venture off-road, the stability control system is tuned to handle shifting surfaces like sand and gravel, preventing rollovers and maintaining steering control. The transparent chassis camera system also acts as a safety feature by allowing the driver to see exactly what is beneath the vehicle, avoiding hidden rocks or debris.

The bottom line

This Leopard 5 ULTRA is the perfect choice for the tech-forward adventurer in the UAE who wants the ruggedness of a traditional 4x4 with the efficiency and power of a modern hybrid. With only 1900 km on the clock, it offers a near-new ownership experience at a competitive point in the market.
