Nissan X Trail XE 4WD

Highlights

• 209 mm ground clearance
• 603 litres boot space with rear seats up
• Selectable All-Mode 4x4-i system

Summary

This Nissan X-Trail is a reliable choice for families seeking a durable SUV that balances city school runs with weekend outdoor adventures. With its silver exterior—a highly favored color in the GCC for its heat-reflecting properties—this vehicle offers better resale resilience compared to darker shades. The X-Trail's boxy design translates to class-leading vertical cargo space, making it a standout for practical loading compared to sleeker crossovers. For a 2012 model, the mileage reflects consistent highway use, which is typical for the region and suits the robust 2.5L powertrain. The combination of GCC-spec air conditioning and Nissan's legendary service footprint across the Emirates makes this a low-stress ownership proposition.

This Car vs Other 2012 X-Trails

This X-Trail’s mileage is standard for a 2012 model in the GCC, where annual averages frequently reach 25,000 km due to highway-heavy commutes between cities. The silver paint remains the most practical choice for the local climate, ensuring the cabin stays cooler in peak summer while holding its value better in the second-hand market. Unlike many 2WD examples from the same year, this 4WD trim offers significantly more utility for beach and light desert trips.

XE 4WD vs Lower Trims

The XE 4WD trim upgrades the driving experience with Nissan's selectable All-Mode 4x4-i system, allowing the driver to switch between 2WD for fuel efficiency and Lock mode for loose surfaces. Unlike base FWD models, this trim includes Hill Descent Control and Hill Start Assist, which are essential for navigating steep parking ramps or gravel tracks. You also benefit from a more versatile interior layout and additional safety sensors standard for this regional specification.

X-Trail vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V of the same era, the X-Trail leads with its superior 209 mm ground clearance and a more utilitarian cargo area. Its boxy proportions allow for taller items that would struggle to fit in the sloped boots of its rivals. Furthermore, Nissan’s air conditioning systems from this generation are widely regarded by GCC owners as being more effective at handling extreme humidity and heat than those in European competitors.

Running Costs & Resale

The 2.5L 4-cylinder engine is built for durability, with real-world combined fuel consumption averaging around 9.6 L/100km, making it economical for long-distance cruising across the Emirates. Nissan’s authorized service network is one of the most extensive in the GCC, ensuring parts are affordable and readily available in every major city. Silver GCC-spec models traditionally depreciate at a slower rate than non-regional imports, retaining roughly 60-65% of their market value over typical three-year ownership cycles.

Performance & Capability

Equipped with a 2.5-litre engine producing approximately 167 hp, the X-Trail provides smooth, predictable power for highway overtaking and city traffic. The 4WD system is the highlight, featuring a lockable center differential that provides genuine traction for weekend camping trips on sandy tracks or gravel wadis. With a 2,000 kg braked towing capacity, it is one of the most capable compact SUVs in its class for light trailers or jet ski transport.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed with GCC family life in mind, featuring a flat rear floor that provides ample legroom for three adults in the back. Storage is a major strength, with 603 litres of boot space that expands significantly thanks to the flat-folding 40/20/40 split rear seats. The air conditioning is robust, featuring dedicated vents that ensure rapid cooling for all passengers even when temperatures exceed 45°C.

Safety

Safety is managed through a suite of active systems including Electronic Stability Program (ESP), Traction Control, and Anti-lock Braking with EBD. This trim also features dual front airbags and a reinforced chassis designed to meet high safety standards for its generation. For GCC highway driving, the inclusion of Hill Descent Control and Brake Assist provides added confidence during sudden stops or steep descents.

The bottom line

Perfect for the budget-conscious family or outdoor enthusiast, this X-Trail offers a proven 4x4 platform and excellent cooling at a price point that makes it one of the most sensible used SUVs on the market today.
