Summary

This 2022 Nissan Patrol Safari represents one of the most durable 4x4 platforms ever built, maintained in its iconic Y61 generation form. While newer SUVs have moved toward complex electronics, the Safari remains a purist's choice with a manual transmission and the legendary 4.8L VTC engine, making it a staple for desert enthusiasts in the GCC. The black exterior is a high-demand resale choice in the region, and its four-year age means it has already bypassed the initial steep depreciation of a new vehicle. For a buyer seeking mechanical longevity and genuine off-road capability, this Safari is a robust alternative to modern crossovers. It stands out as a reliable workhorse perfectly suited for the extreme heat and demanding terrain of the Middle East.

This Car vs Other 2022 Patrol Safaris

With a mileage of 130,000 km over four years, this vehicle reflects a typical GCC usage pattern of roughly 32,500 km per year, often resulting from long-distance highway commutes between emirates. While slightly above the regional average, this is well within the expected duty cycle for the robust TB48DE engine. The black exterior is a premier resale color in the UAE and Saudi markets, ensuring better value retention compared to less conventional shades.

SAFARI vs Lower Trims

The Safari trim is the definitive off-road specification, adding essential hardware like the rear differential lock and the dual-tank system that are often absent on lower-spec base models. It also features the trademark Super Safari-style fender flares and side stripes that command a premium in the used market. Inside, you benefit from the factory-integrated cool box and dedicated rear AC vents, which are non-negotiable for summer comfort in the GCC.

Patrol vs Segment Rivals

Against the Toyota Land Cruiser 70-series or the Jeep Wrangler, the Patrol Safari leads with a more spacious 7-seat configuration and superior highway stability. Its 135-litre fuel capacity offers a significantly longer cruising range for cross-border desert expeditions compared to smaller-tank rivals. Furthermore, the Patrol's air conditioning system is widely regarded in the region as one of the most effective for rapidly cooling a large cabin in 45 degree plus heat.

Running Costs & Resale

The 4.8L VTC engine typically consumes between 16.7 and 17.5 L/100km, reflecting its high-displacement, naturally aspirated design. Maintenance is straightforward and cost-effective due to the vast availability of parts and the extensive Nissan service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Oman. The Safari trim holds its value exceptionally well, with historical GCC data showing roughly 8-10% annual depreciation, far outperforming European luxury SUV counterparts.

Performance & Capability

The 280 hp inline-six engine is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission, offering the driver total control over the 451 Nm of torque during technical dune climbs. A dedicated low-range transfer case and manual locking hubs provide a mechanical purity that modern electronic systems cannot replicate in deep sand. With a 135-litre fuel system and heavy-duty suspension, it is engineered for multi-day desert crossings and long-distance desert touring.

Comfort & Cabin

The interior is designed for practicality and GCC climate resilience, featuring a powerful dual-zone AC system with independent rear controls to keep all seven passengers cool. The center console includes a factory-fitted refrigerator, a highly valued feature for long drives in the regional heat. While the cabin retains a classic aesthetic, the wood-grain trim and leather-wrapped steering wheel provide a touch of traditional luxury that remains popular with Gulf owners.

Safety

Standard safety features include dual front airbags, an anti-lock braking system (ABS), and a reinforced body-on-frame construction that provides a solid safety cell. For highway safety, it is equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and cruise control, which are essential for long stretches of desert road. The Selectable 4WD and rear differential lock also act as vital active safety aids when navigating unpredictable off-road surfaces.

The bottom line

This is the ideal choice for a purist off-roader or a family needing a bulletproof 7-seater that won't lose its value. If you value mechanical reliability and a manual gearbox over modern gadgets, this 2022 Safari is a solid market opportunity.
