Ford Escape SE

Highlights

• 8.0 L/100km combined fuel consumption
• 1,062 litres maximum boot space
• 5-star NHTSA overall safety rating

Summary

This GCC-spec Ford Escape is an ideal entry point into the SUV segment for buyers prioritizing efficiency and daily practicality. As a 9-year-old vehicle, it has been driven approximately 19,000 km per year, which is well below the typical GCC average for crossovers, indicating careful usage across the Emirates. The SE trim is a notable step up from the base model, offering the turbocharged EcoBoost engine that balances power for highway overtaking with lower running costs. Its Blue exterior is a refreshing alternative to the standard palette while remaining a respected choice in the local used market. For a small family or urban commuter, this Escape offers a refined monocoque chassis that handles Dubai’s multi-lane traffic with significantly more agility than larger body-on-frame SUVs.

This Car vs Other 2017 Ford Escapes

With 173,107 km on the odometer, this Escape has averaged roughly 19,200 km annually, sitting below the GCC market average of 25,000 km for similar SUVs. This lower-than-expected mileage suggests the mechanical components have experienced less thermal stress from long-distance desert commuting. The Blue paintwork remains a solid resale choice in the region, offering better heat reflection than darker tones while maintaining a professional aesthetic for the secondary market.

SE vs Lower Trims

The SE trim significantly upgrades the ownership experience over the base S trim by introducing the 1.5L EcoBoost engine with Auto Start-Stop technology, essential for saving fuel in stop-start Sharjah or Riyadh traffic. Inside, you gain dual-zone automatic climate control, a critical feature for managing the GCC summer, along with a power-adjustable driver’s seat and satellite radio capability. It also replaces the basic steel wheels of the entry model with 17-inch alloy wheels for a more premium road presence.

Escape vs Segment Rivals

Compared to the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V of the same era, the Escape leads with its flexible 1,062-litre boot space and more modern turbocharged torque delivery, making it feel peppier during highway merges. While Japanese rivals focus on simplicity, the Ford offers a more insulated cabin and a heavier, more planted feel at high speeds on the E11. It remains a top choice for those who want American comfort with a footprint that is easy to park in crowded urban malls.

Running Costs & Resale

The 1.5L EcoBoost engine delivers a manufacturer-rated 8.0 L/100km combined, which is highly competitive for a non-hybrid SUV in the GCC. Ford maintains an extensive authorized service network across the UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait, ensuring that spare parts are readily available and affordable. The Escape follows a standard 10,000 km service interval, and as a GCC-spec vehicle, it retains its value better than imported American-spec units due to its factory-fitted heavy-duty cooling system.

Performance & Capability

Equipped with a 6-speed SelectShift automatic transmission, this Escape provides smooth power delivery suited for both city cruising and cross-border road trips. The turbocharged 4-cylinder engine produces 179 hp, offering enough punch for confident overtaking on fast-moving UAE highways. Its monocoque construction ensures car-like handling, which is far more comfortable for daily school runs and grocery trips than traditional rugged 4x4s.

Comfort & Cabin

The cabin is designed for family utility, featuring 60/40 split-folding rear seats that allow for versatile cargo configurations. The SE trim includes dedicated rear ventilation ducts, ensuring that passengers in the back stay cool even when exterior temperatures exceed 45°C. With high-quality acoustic glass standard, the interior remains quiet and isolated from road noise during long-distance drives between emirates.

Safety

Safety is a primary strength of the 2017 Escape, which carries a 5-star NHTSA overall rating. Standard equipment on this SE trim includes a rearview camera for easier parking in tight spots, AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control for better grip on sandy or wet roads, and a comprehensive seven-airbag system. It also features Torque Vectoring Control, which helps maintain stability and steering precision during fast cornering or emergency maneuvers.

The bottom line

This GCC-spec Escape is a smart choice for a cost-conscious family looking for a well-maintained SUV with mileage that beats the local average. It offers the perfect balance of modern turbocharged efficiency and proven Ford reliability in the regional climate.
